Global Population Control and Environmental Policies Essay
Global population control and environmental policies are the subject of international controversy. The rate at which human beings are populating the earth and polluting it are some of the most important factors that face the global society today. As of March 2009, the world population is about 6.76 billion. With the high rate of population increase, the global population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2040. With the number of people in the world today and the amount of consumer goods being purchased and used, these factors present a problem to the state of the environment in the near future. Over the past 50 years, the worldââ¬â¢s population has more than doubled and more than 1 billion of the worldââ¬â¢s people do not have enough food toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦These figures strike a resemblance to how fast the earth is gaining population. Many scientists believe that high-income nations present a much greater threat to the ecosystem because there are more people in these countries consuming goods at a faster rate than low-income countries. Ecosystems cannot support high rates of population growth combined with environmental damage. The carrying capacity of the earthââ¬â¢s ecosystems are being surpassed and the ecosystems of many nations are being ruined at a very fast pace. The rate at which countryââ¬â¢s populations are growing, it will not be very long before many of the carrying capacities are surpassed. Environmental degradation involves taking natural resources from the environment and re-introducing them to the environment in the form of pollution. One of the reasons for environmental degradation is greediness. People are trying to maintain high levels of wealth and do not care at what cost to the environment. The perfect example of this would be the current situation in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The land is being stripped of its natural resources everyday and is left behind a barren land. The rate at which the air is being polluted in Fort McMurray is triple that of anywhere else in western Canada. People from all over North America have relocated to Fort McMurray because of the demand of jobs there. 10 Common Errors In Italian Usage Italian Grammar Mistakes
You know not to order an expresso when you step into a caffà ¨ and order a coffee. Youre comfortable with Italian verbs and can even competently conjugate the congiuntivo trapassato. But youll never sound like an Italian native if you persist in repeating linguistic dead giveawaysââ¬âthat is, grammatical mistakes, habits, or tics that always identifies a native English speaker regardless of how competent that person is in Italian. Whatever your reasons for studying Italian, there are Italian grammar usage errors that have been pointed out to you innumerable times by your teacher, tutor, and Italian friends, yet you still persist in making them. Or sometimes, those Italian lessons never stick. Here then is a Top 10 list of the red flags that make English speakers stick out no matter how melodious their pronunciation or despite the fact that theyve learned how to roll their rs. 1. No Pain, No Gain Many English speakers have difficulty pronouncing double consonants in Italian. Heres a simple rule: if you see a consonant in Italian, say it! Unlike English, Italian is a phonetic language, so be certain to pronounce (and write!) both consonants in Italian words when they are doubled. That should help you avoid asking for pain (pena) instead of a pen (penna) at la cartoleria (the stationery store), even though some people consider pens instruments of torture since they dislike writing. 2. I Think I Can, I Think I Can Students of Italian (especially beginners) tend to stick with what they know. Once they learn the three modal verbs, including potere (to be able to, can), they usually unleash a torrent of sentences beginning Posso...? in an effort to sound tactful. But the tendency to use the verb potere when the verb (to succeed, to manage, to be able) is more accurate is a linguistic quirk that immediately identifies a speaker of Italian for whom English is their madrelingua (native tongue). For example, Non sono riuscito a superare gli esami (I wast able to pass the exams) is correct, whereas the sentence Non ho potuto superare gli esami proves the point in more ways than one. 3. Preposterous Prepositions At that very second. On December 26. In 2007. For those studying English as a second language it seems that there is no logic, no reason, no rationale for the use of prepositions. Those studying Italian usually share the same sentiments. Just compare the difference in these sentences: Vado a casa. Vado in banca. Vado al cinema. Not to mention the fact that tra and fra are interchangeable. Reconcile the fact that, just as in English, there are few rules and many exceptions regarding the usage of Italian prepositions. The sooner you accept that, the quicker you can move on to... reciprocal reflexive verbs! Seriously, though, theres only one sure-fire way to approach them: commit to memory how to use the preposizioni semplici (simple prepositions) a, con, da, di, in, per, su, and tra/fra. 4. Magari Fosse Vero! Listen to a reasonably fluent non-native English speaker and chances are you wont hear her use the term goes in place of says (...so my friend goes: When are you going to learn to speak English correctly?), or the hackneyed conversation filler its like, you know,... There are many other words and phrases that are not part of standard English grammar but are common features of casual conversation, as opposed to the formal, written language. Likewise, there are several words and phrases in Italian that have minimal semantic content on their own, but serve important linguistic functions. A conversant who never utters them sounds slightly over-formal and textbookish. They are difficult to translate, but mastering such terms such as cioà ¨, insomma, magari, and mica might even get you elected to the board of Accademia della Crusca. 5. Speaking Without Opening Your Mouth Italians use body language and hand gestures to punctuate an expression and give it a shading that the word or phrase itself lacks. So, unless you want to be mistaken for the indifferent (read non-native Italian) in the corner who keeps his hands stuffed in his pocket, learn a few Italian hand gestures and other nonverbal responses, and join in the animated discussion. 6. Thinking In English, Speaking in Italian Ask an American to name the colors of il tricolore italiano (the Italian tricolor flag) and theyd probably respond: rosso, bianco, e verde (red, white, and green). That would be comparable to referring to the U.S. flag as: blue, white, and redââ¬âtechnically correct, but grating to most natives ears. In fact, Italians invariably refer to their national flag as: verde, bianco, e rossoââ¬â the order, from left-to-right, in which the colors appear. A seemingly trivial difference, but a certain linguistic dead giveaway. The phrase: red, white, and blue is ingrained in Americans linguistic DNA. Its used in marketing, movies, poems, and songs. So its probably unavoidable to use the same formula red, white, and [color] for the Italian flag. These types of errors might not be egregious, but they instantly brand the speaker as a non-native. 7. Dining in the Prison Cafeteria Read any cooking magazine during the spring and summer, when the weather turns warm and families eat outside on terraces, decks, and porches, and there is sure to be an article about dining al fresco. There are even restaurants throughout the United States named Al Fresco (or worse, Alfresco). On your next trip to Italy, though, when you arrive at that highly-recommended trattoria in Siena for lunch and have to decide between dining indoors versus outside on the terrace overlooking Piazza del Campo, the hostess will probably snicker if you ask to dine al fresco. Thats because, strictly speaking, the term means in the coolerââ¬âsimilar to the English slang term that means to be in jail or prison. Instead, use the term allaperto or allaria aperta or even fuori. Other terms that English speakers tend to misuse include il Bel Paese when referring to Italy (its the name of a popular Italian cheese, though). Its analogous to a native New Yorker referring to New York City as The Big Apple. They almost never utter it. Another term, commonly found in English textbooks or travelogues when referring to the Italian language, is la bella lingua. Native Italians never use that phrase when referring to their native tongue. 8. Neigh? Nay? No, Ne The Italian pronoun ne is the most overlooked part of speech, probably because it can be omitted in English (but not in Italianââ¬âand old linguistic habits die hard). Get used to whinnying like a horse, and youll sound more like a native Italian. 9. The Early Bird Catches Fishes Like humor, proverbs are difficult to learn in a foreign language. Oftentimes they are idiomatic, and typically reflect the culture (a preponderance of proverbs in Italian are agrarian or nautical in nature given the countrys background). For example, consider the sentiment: The early bird catches the worm. The popular Italian proverb that conveys the same sentiment is: Chi dorme non piglia pesci (Who sleeps doesnt catch fishes). So transliterating from English might lead to perplexed looks. Linguistic experts point out that proverbiando, simparaââ¬âthat is, by speaking and parsing out proverbs one learns about the language and about the tradition and mores of a culture. 10. Linguistic Training Wheels Io parlo, tu parli, lei parla...Want to immediately identify yourself as a non-native Italian speaker, even if you can conjugate verbi pronominali (pronominal verbs) in your sleep? Persist in using subject pronouns as a linguistic crutch even after learning how to conjugate Italian verbs. Unlike in English, the use of the subject pronouns (io, tu, lui, noi, voi, loro) with the conjugated verb forms is not necessary (and considered redundant unless used for emphasis), since the verb endings identify the mood, tense, person, number, and, in some cases, gender.

Essay On GMO Labeling - 1816 Words
Why Should Labels Be Required If They Will Not Deliver the Truth? Genetic modification is the alteration of an organisms genes to acquire desired characteristics (Kracht para 1). Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are in over 70% of products produced in the United States, especially since most contain traces of corn, soybean, rice or canola, which are some of the grown genetically modified crops. (Steinhauer and Strom para 20). Currently, companies are not required to label GMO-containing products, however, some people are pushing to make it a requirement (para 3). According to a study by Lauren Rene Moore, 1 in 3 adults began eating gluten free food because of labels. Similarly, fear of GMOs arises from GMO labels since labels are used as warnings to inform consumers of possible harm or allergens in food (Millstein 7). GMO labels are unnecessary because genetic modification is safe, beneficial, and regulated by the FDA. Genetic modification is not a new concept. Artificial selection and crossbreeding, both forms of genetic modification, have been used for centuries by scientists and farmers to obtain desired traits of crops or animals (Kracht para 1). Moreover, no known risks have appeared from the consumption of GMOs or the genetic modification of crops. According to 500 different research groups studying GMOs, there is no evidence that GMOs cause any risks to the environment, organisms, plants, food or consumers (Van Eenennaam 20). Quite often I have to face conflict while working with people from different cultures. It is one of the major responsibilities of a leader to handle conflicts and improving team spirits within the organiza tion. Leaders have to respect the religions and point of view of others. However, in reality, it is quite a tough task to do. It requires years of experience, dedication and patience of leaders. Hence, effective leadership is tough to achieve. For this reason, I have developed a months development plan. In future, if I will be able to control a group of people and manage them efficiently then I will consider that I have improved my leadership quality. I hope 5 months are enough to improve my leadership skills. The next step of my plan is to improve my observational skills. Observation can be considered as whole brain skill. In order to make proper observation, I have to use my sense at the fullest capacity. I have to pay close attention to small details. Being observant means a people has to watch people, situations and events. After that the person has to think critically about what he or she founds. For this reason, I will spend more time in order to understand a particular situation. It is important to keep the observation on a particular matter efficiently that the results can be gained properly. I would maintain a proper chart for my observation. It is important to mark the things that I would keep under observation. It is on the basis of the following chart, I will be able to understand my development. It is only when I will be able to understand the situation deeply I shall consider that my observational skill has improved by large extent. I hope that 8 months are long enough to imp rove my observational skills. In the next stage, I am planning to improve my cultural knowledge. I am planning to improve my cultural knowledge within the next 7 months. From years of working experience, I come to understand that cultural diversity is an important part of an organizational workplace. For this reason, it is essential to understand different cultures of different people. In order to improve team spirit within a company, we have to respect cultures and aspects of others. In order to understand about the cultural difference, I would try to build better reputation with people from different culture and would try to know about the cultural perspectives. In order to gain knowledge about different culture, I would have to meet people at a regular basis and would try to interact with them as much as possible. In addition to this, I expect to carry out research on different cultural aspects of people that will help me to know and understand people easily. If I would be able to interact with people easily a nd understand their lifestyle and their way of living, I think I would consider that I have gained much knowledge about their culture. I hope 7 month is good enough to improve my cultural knowledge. The next phase of my development plan is to improve my technical understanding. Personally, I find myself a bit technically backward because at times I have to face with certain issues related to technical understanding. In order to improve my technical knowledge, I have thought of doing a course on the subject that it become ease for me to understand and operate the technologies easily without any kind of dilemma. The resources required are technical support related to computer equipment. In addition to this, I would require a teacher or a guide to support me to understand the technicalities of various software and other related things. If I will be able to operate the basic software and other technical goods easily I will consider myself as a master in technical understandings. I planning enhance my technical understanding within the next 10 months. My last target is to improve my social welfare. I think that I have a number of bad habits and addictions that I need to control. In professional field we often have to meet lots of people and this require to present own self in the right way. I think I need to improve my social welfare with people. I think that regular monitoring of self is the main resource required for the sake of understanding development. I think changes in my personality can be pointed out by others with whom I would be interacting. If I would be able to lead a life without taking any help of the substances that I am addicted to, I would consider that I have done certain development in myself. I think that 6 months are good enough to improve my social welfare capability. Reference List: Harrison, L. (2015).
